Pedestrian Safety in Panama City Beach, Florida
PANAMA CITY BEACH, FL - Florida is one of five U.S. states that account for almost half of the nation's pedestrian accident deaths according to new statistics.
According to Sergeant Ron Livingston with the Florida Highway Patrol, drivers and pedestrians need to remember to look twice before making a turn, crossing the street, or proceeding forward after stopping.
Sergeant Livingston reported that Panama City Beach is a place with many pedestrians going from hotels to bars and restaurants. There are lots of people running across the street. Inattentiveness may be one of the top reasons these accidents occur along the beach.
The most consequential safety tip that Sergeant Livingston volunteered was to avoid wearing headphones so you can hear the traffic near you, avoid wearing dark colors, and always cross the street using a crosswalk.
According to Geoff McConnell, the Panama City Beach Vice Mayor, the city is going to work on solutions that help prevent pedestrian accidents. Mr. McConnell stated that the city has already developed a Pedestrian Action Plan. The plan includes adding crosswalks and placing the sidewalks in safer locations. The plan also adds better lighting and new signage that warns drivers that, by law, they must stop for pedestrians.
Sergeant Livingston reported that the most frequent time of day for accidents involving motor vehicles and pedestrians is between the late evening and early morning hours.
