Tragic, Fatal Wrong-way Accident on GA 365 in Cornelia, Georgia (GA)
According to an online accident news article posted on nowhabersham.com, a 93-year-old man was severely injured in a wrong-way wreck on GA 365 in Cornelia, Georgia (GA).*
The accident was so severe that the 93-year-old man had to be extricated from his car. The man allegedly drove up the highway in the wrong direction of traffic. He then allegedly struck a sports utility vehicle head-on. Law enforcement officers stated that the man allegedly drove the wrong way onto a GA 365 exit ramp. The man headed north in the left southbound lane.
The other motorist involved in the accident was heading south. The driver, a female driver, was operating a Chevrolet Silverado, and the driver attempted to avoid a collision with the wrong-way driver. She attempted to swerve into the righthand lane. As she tried to avoid the head-on accident, she hit a Ford F-550. The wrong-way driver then crashed her Chrysler 200 Touring head-on with her Chevrolet Silverado.
Georgia State Troopers charged the woman driving the Chevrolet Silverado with DUI for hitting the pickup truck. The 93-year-old man who was driving up the exit ramp in the wrong direction sustained severe injuries, including chest, head, and extremity injuries. Habersham EMS took the man to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, Georgia. Georgia State Highway Patrol troopers issued him severe traffic violation warnings for distracted driving, disobeying a traffic signal, and failure to yield right of way.
The pickup truck driver, a 54-year-old man from Clarkesville, Georgia, was not injured in the accident.
According to the accident report, the crash occurred at approximately 6:40 in the morning. The accident required the southbound lanes of the highway to be shut down temporarily near Iron Ore Road.
