AJC Reports 24 People Tragically Died in Georgia Accidents Throughout the Thanksgiving Weekend

December 02, 2020

According to a report published on AJC.com, the Georgia Department of Public Safety stated that there were 24 people tragically killed in motor vehicle accidents in Georgia over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

The number of fatalities doubled since 2019 during the same time.

The Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety posted a solemn message about the tragic fatalities and also thanked law enforcement agencies for their efforts to save lives this year and for working the accident scenes over the holiday weekend.  Georgia State troopers investigated seventeen of the fatal accidents, while police agencies throughout Georgia responded to seven other fatal crashes.

A few of the accidents are still under investigation.  Law enforcement agencies reported that alcohol or speed contributed to the causation of many of the fatal collisions. Georgia State Patrol's Lieutenant Matt Riley stated that the rain storms also could have caused a number of the motor vehicle accidents.

In the Atlanta metro area, fatal accidents were reported in Fulton, DeKalb, Paulding and Clayton counties.  Georgia State troopers along with local law enforcement investigators also investigated fatal accidents in Peach County, Americus, Thomasville, Milledgeville, Madison, Richmond County, Dublin, Gainesville, Tifton, Waycross, and Washington.

In total, Georgia State troopers investigated more than 600 traffic accidents that resulted in over 300 injuries.  Georgia State troopers and other law enforcement officers issued over 11,000 citations, over 13,000 warnings, and made over 280 drunk drinking arrests.  There were also more than  6,500 speeding tickets issued over the holiday weekend.

According to AAA, the number of cars on the road during the Thanksgiving holiday was expected to fall by almost 5% this year.  In Georgia, AAA expected about 1.6 million travelers, and most were expected to travel by car.  The high number of accidents and fatalities was an unfortunate surprise.
