Truck Crash Kills One on Interstate 475 on Bibb County, Georgia (GA)

November 20, 2020

BIBB COUNTY, GA- 13wmaz.com writes that a crash killed one person this week in Bibb County, Georgia.*

The incident occurred on Interstate 475 in the southbound lanes close to the exit for the Eisenhower Parkway. A 2018 Honda Civic collided with a tire that came off of an RV. the victim was a 58-year-old man from Warner Robins, Georgia. The other driver was identified as a 66-year-old woman from Michigan. The RV's tire caused the Honda to become disabled, and the driver stopped his car in the middle of the road. While the car was sitting on the road, a FedEx tractor-trailer traveling south struck the rear of the smaller vehicle.

The driver in the truck was identified as a 26-year-old man from Florida. The victim died at the scene of the crash. Investigators are still looking into the cause of the incident and have asked that any witnesses or individuals with information contact the Bibb County Sheriff's Office or Crime Stoppers.

Crashes involving large trucks are some of the most serious collisions on the road. Unfortunately, statistics indicate that these incidents are increasing throughout the United States. In 2019 the number of large truck crash-related fatalities rose by one percent. The one percent increase might seem like a small difference; however, other categories of crash-related deaths dropped by 1.2 percent last year.

Large trucks might benefit from being equipped with more advanced safety features, including those that alert drivers when they are approaching objects or vehicles in the road too quickly. Safety studies suggest that these features are helping reduce the number of crash-related deaths. Considering that most victims in truck collisions are individuals traveling in smaller vehicles, increasing safety features on large trucks would be an improvement not only for occupants of those vehicles but also for everyone sharing the road with commercial trucks.
