One Dead in Tragic Moped Crash on The Perimeter in Sandy Springs, Georgia (GA)

November 17, 2020

SANDY SPRINGS, GA- writes that a woman from Ghana died in a moped accident in Sandy Springs this week.*

The incident took place in the eastbound lanes close to New Northside Drive. The victim, identified as a 40-year-old woman, was struck from behind by another car. The driver in the other vehicle reportedly attempted to swerve to avoid impact but struck the moped and its rider. The victim was knocked off her vehicle, and another car struck her. The woman sustained severe injuries and died at the scene.

Police stated that both drivers involved in the crash remained at the site and cooperated with investigators. Investigations into the incident are still underway. According to reports, the woman moved from Ghana 22 years ago after winning a visa lottery. Images from the crash scene show the irreparably damaged moped on the road, with debris strewn across the pavement.

Motorcycles and mopeds present several dangers as compared to enclosed vehicles. While the vehicles themselves offer few safety features, one of the greatest risks people on motorcycles and mopeds face is that they will be overlooked by other drivers on the road.

Because of their smaller size, motorcyclists can easily end up in another driver's blind spot. Drivers may also overlook a motorcycle when they are turning, resulting in the driver cutting into the path of the motorcycle. Of course, when it comes to crashes between larger vehicles and mopeds or motorcycles, the person on that smaller, two-wheeled vehicle will likely suffer the worst consequences. It is the responsibility of every driver on the road to use caution and be mindful of more vulnerable road users. Motorcyclists can help improve their own safety by wearing helmets and bright clothes.
