Crash Injures Cyclist on Hillsborough Trail in the Villages, Florida (FL)
THE VILLAGES, FL- Villages-news.com writes that a crash occurred between a vehicle and a bicycle this week close to the Manatee Recreation Center.*
The cyclist injured in the crash was identified as a 61-year-old man. The individual was in a multi-modal lane on Hillsborough trail in the early morning when a 2003 Jaguar struck the rear of his bike. Reports state that the driver who struck the victim then fled the scene. The victim suffered multiple injuries, including a broken rib, a head injury, a separated shoulder, and severe abrasions. At the time of the crash, the victim was using a helmet.
The victim told reporters that he was in the far right and of the golf cart lane when the Jaguar entered that lane and accelerated toward him. He stated he had nowhere to turn to avoid the impact and that he struck the windshield, split his helmet in half, and then rolled off onto the pavement. The drivers sped away from the scene. The cyclist thinks that the driver might have been texting at the time of the crash.
Witnesses were able to take down the license plate of the Jaguar that caused the collision. The Florida Highway Patrol is requesting that anyone with information regarding the crash contact their office or Crime Stoppers. The crash is the second hit-and-run bicycle crash to take place in The Villages this week. A 60-year-old woman from the village of Dunedin was struck by a white Mercedes that also fled the scene of the crash.
The victim in that crash was also wearing a helmet but still sustained brain injuries as a result of the collision. The driver had also struck the victim's husband, a 68-year-old man. Police believe the Mercedes involved in that crash sustained significant damage on its right and front side and that the driver was a woman with white hair.
