Data regarding workplace injuries and fatalities are collected by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Based on their numbers, the workplace rate of deaths for workers ranges from a low of 1.6 per 100,000 workers to a high of 10.2 fatalities per 100,000 workers. States with the highest rates of deadly workplace injuries are often those with the most dangerous types of employment. For instance, states that topped the list when it comes to deadly work-related accidents include Alaska, North Dakota, Wyoming, and West Virginia.
Industries that lead to high rates of fatalities include forestry, fishing, agriculture, and mining. Georgia has a rate of 4.1 fatalities per 100,000 workers. Those numbers are roughly comparable to many neighboring states and place Georgia somewhere in the middle when it comes to work-related risks. Some states are seeing improvements in workplace safety, while 21 states have recently experienced increases in fatal work-related accidents.
When people suffer injuries or die in their places of work, OSHA is typically responsible for investigating determining whether the business was involved and any safety-related violations. In many cases, work-related accidents could have been prevented had the business followed all safety regulations. Since OSHA was founded, the rate of work-related fatalities has dropped significantly.
