Workplace Accident at SK Battery Plant Injures Two in Commerce, Georgia (GA)

JACKSON COUNTY, GA- Fox5atlanta.com writes that an accident involving two workers at the SK Battery Factory occurred this week in Jackson County.*

The plant, which is located in Commerce, is just off of the Steve Reynolds Industrial Parkway. The incident led to emergency crews responding to the area. Reports indicate that a man fell at the plant and landed on a woman. Both of those victims reportedly sustained critical injuries as a result of the accident. The victims are now recovering at a local hospital, and an investigation was launched into what caused the incident.*

Data regarding workplace injuries and fatalities are collected by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Based on their numbers, the workplace rate of deaths for workers ranges from a low of 1.6 per 100,000 workers to a high of 10.2 fatalities per 100,000 workers. States with the highest rates of deadly workplace injuries are often those with the most dangerous types of employment. For instance, states that topped the list when it comes to deadly work-related accidents include Alaska, North Dakota, Wyoming, and West Virginia. 

Industries that lead to high rates of fatalities include forestry, fishing, agriculture, and mining. Georgia has a rate of 4.1 fatalities per 100,000 workers. Those numbers are roughly comparable to many neighboring states and place Georgia somewhere in the middle when it comes to work-related risks. Some states are seeing improvements in workplace safety, while 21 states have recently experienced increases in fatal work-related accidents.

In many cases, work-related accidents could have been prevented had the business followed all safety regulations. Since OSHA was founded, the rate of work-related fatalities has dropped significantly.
