Tragic Crash Kills Motorcyclist on North Amelia Avenue in DeLand, Florida (FL)
DELAND, FL- News-journalonline.com writes that a crash left one person dead this week in DeLand. The incident occurred in the late morning on North Amelia Avenue at its intersection with East Church Street.*
The victim was riding a Suzuki motorcycle southbound when he collided with a car traveling on East Church Street. The victim reportedly ended up stuck beneath the car and died at the scene. The person driving the car suffered injuries, and responders transported that individual to the Central Florida Regional Hospital for treatment. The victim was a 25-year-old man from DeLand. Investigators are still looking into the cause of the wreck.
Motorcyclists are about twenty times as likely to die in a crash as are people in passenger vehicles. Motorcycles do not have the same safety features that are available to people driving in passenger cars. However, the lack of seatbelts, airbags, and even outer shells are only some of the dangers that these road users face. As smaller vehicles, motorcycles can more easily be overlooked on the road. Safety experts often recommend that motorcyclists wear bright-colored clothing as one way to reduce their risk of dying in a collision caused by a driver failing to notice them. Also, helmets are a vital part of motorcycle safety.
Studies indicate that helmets are effective at reducing the risk of death as well as the danger of severe traumatic brain injuries. Motorcyclists can also keep themselves safer on the road by ensuring they take the proper steps to learn how to control their vehicles. Rider safety courses are often offered and can help keep motorcyclists' skills sharp. Unfortunately, no matter how careful a motorcyclist might be, other drivers on the road can put these individuals in harm's way. It is the responsibility of drivers to keep an eye out for motorcyclists and to share the road with all road users.
