Crash Injures Construction Worker on Interstate 95 in Bryan County, Georgia (GA)
BRYAN COUNTY, GA- Wtoc.com writes that a construction worker suffered serious injuries in a crash that took place in Bryan County. The incident took place in the late evening on Interstate 95 in the northbound lanes. At the location of the crash, crews are working to construct a new exit for Richmond Hill. The worker was on construction equipment at the time and was trying to cross over the northbound lanes.*
Reports indicate that the equipment was either a scissor lift or a boom lift. The crash caused the worker to be thrown from the equipment. The authorities did not indicate the severity of the worker's injuries, nor did they state the cause of the crash.
Work zones present dangers to drivers and the workers on site. In 2018, 672 people died in crashes that occurred in work zones. The annual average over there years was 688.7 deaths. Many of those crashes involved trucks. In 2018, 203 of the deaths were caused in collisions that involved these large vehicles. Workers were killed in 124 of those accidents.
Driving in a work zone presents certain risks. The traffic patterns change as vehicles enter these areas. Signs are used for alerting drivers of the need to focus and of reductions in speed limits and lanes. While signage is used to help let drivers know what to expect and what to do in response, the reality is that sometimes work zones create unexpected scenarios. The only real way to stay safe is to use extra caution and be ready for anything. Not only do traffic patterns change, but there are often workers on-site, even late at night. Construction equipment or vehicles could be present, and workers may also be outside of vehicles and near the flow of traffic.
