Crash Kills One on Shallowford Road in East Cobb, Georgia (GA)

September 14, 2020

EAST COBB, GA- Ajc.com writes that a crash took place this week in East Cobb that killed one woman. The incident involved a dump truck that was heading westbound on Shallowford Road in the late morning. A Lincoln MKZ was trying to make a left turn off Shallowford Road and onto Chimney Lake Drive.*

The truck collided with the driver’s side of the Lincoln. The woman in the Lincoln, identified as a 62-year-old from Roswell, died at the crash site. The other driver, a 50-year-old Cartersville man, did not report injuries. Police have not filed charges in relation to the collision. The roads were closed down following the collision but reopened in the early afternoon. Investigators are seeking anyone with information about the wreck.

Left turns are dangerous and lead to many intersection collisions. About 5.8 million crashes take place every year at intersections across the country. Most of those crashes take place because of a driver who is trying to turn left.

Because of the risks involved in making left turns, it is a good idea to avoid making such maneuvers at all. Studies indicate that avoiding left turns is not only safer but will yield economic benefits as well. Companies that focus on the delivery of goods and services have discovered that by designing routes that avoid left turns, they can save fuel and time, which in turn reduces their costs.

Of course, designing better intersections could eliminate even the possibility of making a left turn. Roundabouts, for example, have been shown to drastically reduce the number of crashes and the severity of collisions. With all cars traveling in the same direction, at a lower speed, crashes are simply less likely to take place. Roundabouts also lead to a better flow of traffic.
