Infant Dies in Crash on Exit from Interstate 10 in Baker County, Florida (FL)

September 01, 2020

BAKER COUNTY, FL- Mycbs4.com writes that a baby was killed in a crash in Baker County this week. The incident occurred when a pickup truck collided with the side of the victim’s car. The baby died from her injuries. She was eleven months old.*

The driver of the car, a 21-year-old woman, was critically injured in the wreck. The driver in the pickup truck also suffered injuries in the crash. Police did not release the names of the victims.

Car crashes are one of the main causes of fatalities for children in the United States. From 2013 through 2017, there were 3,313 deaths of children below thirteen years old that were caused by crashes. Of that total, 37 percent were not using their car seats or any restraints.

Sadly, even though many caregivers and parents believe that they are keeping children safe in car seats, many of these people have not properly installed the seats, and the children are not as protected as they could and should be when traveling.

It is vital for parents to check that their car seats are properly installed and to register the seats so that they receive notification of any recalls.

When used correctly, car seats decrease the risk of an infant dying in a crash by 71 percent. For toddlers, the risk drops 54 percent. According to the NHTSA, an estimated 325 children survived crashes in 2017 alone that would likely have killed them were they not using car seats. The tragic fact is that 46 children who died likely would be alive today had they to been restrained.

It is possible to get help with the installation. Find a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician who can check your car seat to determine that it is being used properly and providing the best protection possible.
