Crash Severely Injures Elderly Man on Whitlock Avenue in Marietta, Georgia (GA)

August 25, 2020

Marietta, GA- writes that a head-on crash occurred this week in Marietta, Georgia. The incident led to severe injuries for an 84-year-old motorist.*

According to reports, a group referred to as “car enthusiasts” were driving west on Whitlock Avenue when one of the group attempted to pass a car by entering the opposite lanes of traffic in a no-passing zone. Other members of the group also followed and entered the eastbound lanes of traffic.  The victim’s car collided head-on with a 41-year-old Austell man’s Dodge Charger. The victim’s vehicle then spun and collided with a Chevrolet Malibu, and finally, struck a Ford Mustang. Police stated that the drivers, who were part of a car enthusiast club, were heading to a location to meet up when they became separated. The driver who crossed into the opposite traffic lanes was attempting to catch up to the other members of the group at the time of the incident. The impact caused severe life-threatening injuries to the 84-year-old Marietta man.

While charges have not yet been filed against the driver who caused the incident, the crash remains under investigation. Police reports indicate that the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program is carrying out the investigation. Anyone with information regarding the wreck is being asked to contact officers.

When it comes to head-on impacts, the results are frequently severe. In cases where drivers are traveling at relatively modest speeds, there is a high risk of death. Cars are not able to protect occupants effectively in head-on impacts at speeds of more than 40 miles per hour. At such speeds, the forces involved are intense, and modern car manufacturers have not found effective ways to better protect people from serious and often fatal injuries in such wrecks.
