18-Wheeler Trucks Collide on SR 33 in Lakeland, Florida (FL)

August 16, 2020

LAKELAND, FL- writes that State Road 33 was closed down this week while crews worked to clear the scene of a truck collision. The incident occurred in the early morning close to Interstate 4.*

According to reports, one of the involved semis collided with a support column under Interstate 4. The two trucks collided beneath that overpass leading to the crash debris being wedged under the overpass. An engineer was sent to view the structure and determine whether the accident damaged the integrity of the overpass. The impact injured one of the truck drivers, who responders transported to the hospital. The road was closed until the middle of the afternoon. Based on images taken from the scene, the two trailers appear to be stuck next to one another, and one is severely damaged.

While other types of fatalities dropped in 2019, large truck crash-related deaths increased by about one percent. It is not yet clear why this occurred, but fatalities were down in every other category, including drivers, passengers, motorcyclists, cyclists, and pedestrians. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) writes that collisions dropped in nine regions, and increased in just one. The southeast, which is the region including Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, and Tennessee, experienced a rise of two percent in deadly wrecks.

When it comes to vehicle safety, declines in traffic deaths are likely in part the result of improving safety features in passenger cars. Features such as forward collision support technology and blind-spot detections are working to lower the number of crashes involving these vehicles. Such features are not yet widely available in large commercial trucks.
