One Tow Truck Drivers Dies Every Six Days in the United States
AUGUSTA, GA - A recent report from AAA indicated that once every six days, a tow truck driver dies on the job. The findings are no surprise to those in the industry who understand the dangers that come with driving a tow truck.
In Georgia, the state's move over law dictates that when an emergency vehicle with flashing lights is on the shoulder of the road, drivers must move a lane over to provide a safe window of space for those workers. Tow trucks qualify as an emergency vehicle, and drivers should comply with the law when passing them on the side of the road.
One driver stated that towing is frightening work, especially because so many drivers simply do not pull over or slow down to accommodate the tow truck drivers.
About 43 drivers are killed for every 100,000 drivers in the tow driving industry. In most professions, that number is about three.
Tow truck operators fear that motorists who are texting or distracted will fail to see them as they are passing on the road.
