Tragic Crash Kills Two on Georgia 49 in Fort Valley, Georgia (GA)

August 16, 2020

FORT VALLEY, GA- 41nbc.com writes that a crash took place in the late morning this week in Peach County that left two people dead. The incident occurred when the vehicle involved struck a tree before rotating.*

The driver, identified as a 33-year-old woman, and a passenger, identified as a 55-year-old woman, both died at the scene from the injuries that they sustained in the collision.

Most car accidents are the result of drivers making mistakes. Just over three out of four wrecks are caused by drivers who engaged in unsafe driving activities, including driving while drunk, distracted, or operating their vehicles at speeds that were not safe for the roadway conditions. In Georgia, crashes led to 1,507 fatalities in 2019. This number marked a small rise compared to the previous year and an end to the state's two-year decline in annual traffic deaths.

Traffic fatalities are tragic and frustrating, in part because most of these incidents are preventable. In about six out of ten crashes, the victims were not using their seatbelts.

The state warns drivers to avoid dangerous practices behind the wheel, including speeding, distracted driving and driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Georgia has tried to cut down on the dangers faced by motorists in the state by implementing a hands-free law. This prohibits the use of a phone while operating a car. The ban extends to any purpose a person might use the phone for as long as the phone is in contact with that person's body. Voice to text is permitted, but viewing a screen and videos is not allowed pursuant to the law.
