Tragic Crash Reported on Jones Loop Road in Punta Gorda, Florida (FL)

July 31, 2020

PUNTA GORDA, FL- writes that a tragic collision took place this week in Punta Gorda at the intersection of Jones Loop Road and Taylor Road. The crash occurred in the mid-afternoon and involved a semi-truck. The authorities are requesting that anyone in the area avoid the scene of the collision.*

The identities of those involved have not been released.

Deadly truck collisions are increasing nationally. These massive vehicles are creating a host of problems for others in passenger cars. While reports of such tragic incidents continue to pile up, there are known steps that the industry or regulators could take to reduce the number of crashes.

New technology offers promising ways to lower the risk of truck crashes. Features such as automatic emergency braking or forward collision warning systems are able to prevent many rear-end collisions. These systems and other types of technology could be used to greatly lower the number of crashes involving large trucks. Still, regulators have failed to require such potentially life-saving technology.

Preventing rear-ends collisions alone would stop many fatal incidents each year. Studies indicate that 300 people die in crashes caused by semis running into the back of other vehicles annually.

Some have criticized the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for failing to take steps to limit the risks posed by semis to others on the road. The rear-end crash avoidance technology has the ability to prevent about 70 percent of rear-end truck crashes. Implementing such features was recommended by the National Transportation Safety Board on at least ten occasions dating back to the 1990s. The government has yet to act on those recommendations.
