Two Injured, Including Police Officer in Crash on Forest Hill Road in Powder Springs, Georgia (GA)

July 31, 2020

POWDER SPRINGS, GA- Northwestgeorgianews.com writes that a collision occurred on Forest Hill Road at Powder Springs Road in Cobb County this week. The incident involved a Jeep and a police vehicle. The images from the scene show a jeep and police sedan with severe front-end damage.*

Investigators are still looking into the crash, but early reports indicate that the Jeep drove through a red light. The Powder Springs police department is using the crash to highlight their participation in Operation Southern Shield, which is aimed at catching drivers who are speeding, distracted, drunk, or reckless.

The identities of those involved were not yet released. The officer and the other driver both suffered injuries, and responders transported them to a nearby hospital.

Intersection crashes often lead to severe injuries and fatalities. Studies suggest that the number of deadly intersection incidents could be drastically cut if more roundabouts were used rather than cross-section intersections. As compared to intersections that are controlled with traffic lights and stop signs, roundabouts cut the overall number of wrecks by about 37 percent. However, the main benefits of this traffic feature are that they lead to massive reductions in severe injury-causing and fatal collisions. Deadly crashes, based on one study, dropped by a massive 90 percent. Injury collisions declined by 75 percent in the same study. Pedestrians also benefit from roundabouts, and 40 percent fewer pedestrian crashes were reported when roundabouts replaced lights or stop signs.

With all traffic heading in the same direction and at lower speeds, the opportunity for something to go wrong is much lower.
