Crash Kills One on Highway 196 in Liberty County, Georgia (GA)
LIBERTY COUNTY, GA- Wtoc.com writes that a crash took place this week in Liberty County that left one person dead. The incident occurred at the intersection of Highway 196 and John Wells Road in the later evening.*
A driver in a pickup truck was heading westbound on the highway and collided with a car that was crossing through the intersection. The wreck left the driver in the smaller vehicle dead on the site of the collision. The victim's sister was injured in the crash as well and was transported to the hospital. Reports indicate that the sister did not suffer life-threatening injuries. The driver in the pickup truck sustained injuries as well.
The highway remained closed for several hours while crews worked to investigate and clear the scene of the crash.
There are plenty of opportunities for crashes to occur at intersections because drivers are traveling in different directions and are crossing into one another's paths. Intersection collisions account for about 40 percent of all traffic accidents, and about one in five vehicle-related deaths. Nearly half of all intersection crash deaths are caused by angle impacts.
Traffic studies suggest that the number of such deaths could be drastically reduced if more roundabouts were used instead of cross-sections. Angle crashes could be largely prevented through the use of roundabouts because cars in roundabouts are all traveling in the same direction.
The benefits of roundabouts, which include the improvements to traffic flow and fuel consumption, are most obvious in the striking statistics regarding fatal crashes. Deadly wrecks drop by 90 percent when a roundabout replaces a cross-section. Other types of accidents, such as pedestrian collisions, also decline.
