Two Injured in Crash on Tara Boulevard in Clayton County, Georgia (GA)
CLAYTON COUNTY, GA- Ajc.com writes that a crash left two people with severe injuries this week in Clayton County. One of the victims is now reportedly in critical condition.*
The incident took place at the intersection of Tara Road and Tara Boulevard in the mid-afternoon. One of the drivers appears to have turned into the path of the other vehicle.
Responders rushed the two victims to a local hospital. One of the two is stable at this time.
The area in which the crash occurred is currently under construction. The wreck led to a two-hour closure of southbound travel lanes within the construction zone. By late afternoon, the lanes were cleared and opened for traffic.
The accident is still under investigation, and so far, no identities are available for the individuals involved.
Studies indicate that crossroad style intersections are not the safest way to control traffic. Signals and stop signs are far less effective than roundabouts. When a roundabout is used to replace one of these traditional intersections, the risk of many common types of crashes drops significantly. The opportunity for crashes caused by left-turns and head-on impacts decline drastically because every car is heading in the same direction. Pedestrians also reap the benefit of this design and are less likely to sustain injuries. Traffic in an intersection moves more slowly, but they are actually more efficient than other intersections and have been shown to lower vehicle emissions and reduce fuel consumption.
One study indicated that replacing stop signs and traffic lights with roundabouts causes a 72 to 80 percent drop in injury-causing collisions at those locations.
