PERRY, GA- writes that a crash occurred in Perry at the intersection of Swift Street and Old Field Lane. A cement truck, which overturned, and a car were involved in the crash. The fire department responded to the incident. Drivers were asked to avoid the intersection while crews worked to clear the scene.*

Rollover crashes are one of the more dangerous crash types that truck drivers face on the road. These incidents are relatively rare and only account for a little more than three percent of all truck crashes. However, rollovers carry a high risk of death and lead to over 50 percent of trucker deaths.

Some of the causes of these incidents include trucker fatigue, distracted driving, and drivers who are overworked. However, infrastructure is another problem that often leads to rollovers.

There are now more trucks on the road, but highways have not kept up with the level of traffic. Additionally, many of these roads were designed decades ago and without today’s large trucks in mind. As such, the turns may be too tight for trucks to navigate safely. In Georgia, Atlanta’s roadways are particularly perilous for the many truckers who travel them. Hundreds of people have died in the area in truck rollover crashes.

In Atlanta, exit ramps that require drivers to rapidly reduce their speed lead to a high risk of rollover crashes.

Truckers say that rollovers often start with the trailer, but that the cab is then flung over as well. Many drivers are ejected when this happens.
