Two Injured in Crash Between Semi and Firetruck on Interstate 75 in Lincoln Park, Michigan

July 20, 2020

LINCOLN PARK, MI- writes that a crash between a semi and a firetruck resulted in two firefighters sustaining injuries this week in Lincoln Park. The collision occurred on Interstate 75 close to Dix Highway.*

One of the victims suffered severe injuries, and the other is in critical condition.

Large trucks are involved in thousands of fatal collisions every year. In 2018, more than 4,000 people died in wrecks that involved these massive vehicles. The victims are most often people outside of the trucks. Occupants in passenger cars are the most likely to suffer the consequences of a truck crash.

The trucks themselves create many risks for people on the road. The vehicles outweigh passenger cars by around 20, if not 30 times. The massive size also creates problems when it comes to stopping quickly. Large trucks will require much greater distances to come to a stop due to their weight, but if the weather is bad, the road is slick, or the brakes are not well-maintained, the distance to stop can be even greater. This can lead to dangers in the event the driver needs to come to an emergency stop.

The drivers also pose risks at times because they are traveling for extended periods, potentially leading to fatigue and reduced driver abilities. Studies indicate that after eight hours of driving, truckers are at double the risk of crashing. Still, regulations allow for these drivers to travel for up to eleven hours at a time. The schedule drivers must maintain creates sleep disruption and potentially deprivation, which is dangerous when they are operating these large vehicles on crowded roadways.
