Tragic Crash Reported on Peach Orchard Road in Augusta, Georgia (GA)

July 20, 2020

AUGUSTA, GA- writes that a deadly crash occurred in Richmond County this week on Peach Orchard Road at its intersection with Phinizy Road. The victim in that crash was identified as a 21-year-old from Augusta.*

The young driver was heading northbound on Peach Orchard Road, and another car made a left turn off of Peach Orchard and onto Phinizy Road.

Reports indicate that the victim died in the late afternoon.

Left turns require drivers to turn across oncoming traffic. This is a risky move that often leads to severe accidents. More than half of crossing path collisions involve a driver making a left turn. Studies routinely indicate the risks of left turns.

When waiting to make a left turn, drivers must look at and determine the distance of oncoming cars and how fast those vehicles are traveling. Making such determinations is complicated.

In many places, officials have moved to make left turns less dangerous by making infrastructure changes. For instance, adding left-turn arrows helps to cut the number of such incidents by about 54 percent.

Some experts actually say that the best move would be to eliminate left turns entirely. UPS drivers have been traveling routes that avoid most left turns as part of an effort to make driving safer and more efficient. Even if the route is a bit longer, studies indicate that time and fuel can be saved by avoiding the time spent sitting idle waiting for an opportunity to turn left.

Given the dangers and wasted time involved in making a left turn, drivers may be better off following UPS’s lead and trying to navigate paths that avoid the turns as well.
