One Killed in Tragic Crash on Interstate 95 in Hanover, Virginia

HANOVER, VA- Wtvr.com writes that a crash left one person dead on Interstate 95 in Hanover near Richmond this week. The authorities identified the victim as a 27-year-old man from Naples, Florida. Reports indicate that the man was a passenger at the time of the incident.*

According to the Virginia State Police, the victim was in a 2020 BMW 330I and heading northbound overnight when the car left the roadway and collided with a road sign. The vehicle then rolled over and struck a tree. The victim, who was wearing a seatbelt, died in the wreck. The driver, identified as a 25-year-old man also from Naples, Florida, was injured in the crash. Police stated that charges will be filed against the driver, but that the crash is currently still under investigation. 

Fixed object crashes are often deadly. In fact, about one out of every five people killed in traffic accidents dies in a fixed object crash. Trees are struck more often than any other type of object along the side of the road, with utility poles and traffic barriers also creating common hazards. 

Most fixed object incidents take place after dark, and one of the main causes of such wrecks is alcohol impairment. In other cases, drivers cause these incidents because they fall asleep, are speeding, failing to pay attention, or driving in a situation with poor visibility. 

In 2018, 7,422 died in collisions with fixed objects. The thousands of deaths actually mark a decline in such incidents as compared to 2017. The numbers dropped six percent from 2017 to 2018, and have decreased 30 percent since 1979. Still, since 1979, the proportion of deadly crashes made up by fixed object wrecks has remained between nineteen and 23 percent.
