Traffic Slow on Interstate 75 in Monroe and Bibb County, Georgia Following Two Crashes

MONROE COUNTY, GA- According to 13wmaz.com, two crashes in Georgia led to delays on Interstate 75N. One of the incidents left all lanes blocked in Monroe County, while a crash in Bibb County closed two out of three lanes.* 

The crash in Monroe involved multiple vehicles and occurred close to Pate Road. Officials stated that the crash would likely not be cleared until the middle of the night. The other wreck occurred in Bibb County near exit 163, and officials stated that that incident would be cleared by the late evening. 

Crashes resulting in fatalities declined in Georgia in 2017 and 2018. In 2017, the state saw 1,540 deaths resulting from car crashes. The number dropped to 1,504 in 2018, indicating that some of the state's work to improve traffic safety must be paying off. 

Georgia recently enacted a hands-free law that prevents people from using hand-held electronics while driving. The reduced number of traffic deaths was seen by many officials as a sign of the efficacy of that legislation. 

Sadly, the number of pedestrians killed increased even while other traffic fatalities dropped in the state. Officials believe that cellphones are playing a part in the increasing number of pedestrian deaths in the state as well. Over the course of five years, Georgia saw the number of pedestrians killed on its roads increase by a shocking 60 percent. 

To stay safe, officials believe that both drivers and pedestrians have to stop looking at their phones instead of paying attention to their surroundings. 

Nationally, traffic deaths also dropped in 2018, and pedestrian fatalities increased, showing a similar trend to Georgia.
