One Killed, Four Injured in Tragic Crash at Emergency Room in Atlanta, Georgia (GA)

July 05, 2020

ATLANTA, GA- According to 11alive.com, a tragic collision in Atlanta killed one person and injured four others this week in Atlanta. The incident took place when a driver crashed into the entrance of an emergency room at the Piedmont Hospital.*

The driver was identified as a 75-year-old woman who was operating a Mercedes-Benz SUV. The woman lost control of the car and collided with another vehicle before striking the building. The SUV traveled into the patient entrance killing one person and injuring four others. The driver did not sustain injuries in the wreck.

The victim was identified as a 55-year-old woman.

A contractor was called to the scene to determine whether the crash caused structural damage to the building. The broken glass has since been replaced, and the facility is operational again.

The hospital expressed its condolences to the family of the woman killed in the tragic accident.

Police are still working to determine what caused the collision. The driver was scheduled for an appointment at the facility when she crashed into the hospital.

Statistics indicate that while nineteen-percent of drivers are ages 60 and older, these motorists cause 40 percent of crashes into buildings. States that have the highest number of drivers ages 65 and up also have the most car-into-building accidents.

Safety advocates state that there are resources available for older motorists that can help them maintain their driving abilities, and assess them so that they know when it might not be safe for them to continue operating a vehicle.

Many of these incidents could be prevented through improvements to parking lot designs and security barriers.
