Girls Injured in Horrible T-Bone Crash on Tramway Boulevard in Duke City, New Mexico (NM)
DUKE CITY, NM- Abqjournal.com writes that a terrible crash severely injured two teenagers in New Mexico. The incident occurred at the intersection of Tramway Boulevard and Academy Boulevard after the girls and other members of their high school basketball team had gone on a hike. The driver had only just turned sixteen and was gifted a car for her birthday.*
A car carrying two young men reportedly ran through a red traffic light and struck the side of the girls’ car in the late morning. Following the impact, the two men left the scene on foot, leaving the severely injured girls in their mangled car.
The passenger became trapped by the impact and had to be freed by emergency responders. The wreck caused three breaks to the girl’s femur and broke her foot. She underwent a four and a half hour surgery and required a blood transfusion.
The girl’s mother learned that after the crash, a man stayed and held her daughter’s hand even while the car appeared at risk of igniting.
The driver sustained four neck fractures, four additional fractures on her upper body, and severe gashes in her head, which required fourteen staples and stitches as well.
While the girls are healing from their terrible injuries, their families are grateful that the two young athletes survived. The team and the community have been supporting the families through this difficult time.
It is unlikely that either of the girls will be able to play basketball during the 2020-2021 school year. Both of their injuries are too substantial.
The driver who caused the wreck has not been apprehended.
New Mexico has the highest per capita rate of deadly hit-and-run crashes in the country.
