Georgia and Alabama Working to Prevent Drunk Boating

July 06, 2020

USA- Operation Dry Water is taking effect in Georgia and Alabama this year in an effort to raise awareness and prevent drunk boating incidents, according to WLTZ.COM.

Officials noticed a rise in boaters violating safety regulations this year. The likely cause is that more people are out on the water because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sadly, the Fourth of July has become a holiday weekend marked by a rise in drunk boating occurrences, and in some incidents, tragic accidents. Officers say that people should enjoy time with friends and family on the water, but that they must do so responsibly and never operate a vessel after consuming alcohol.

Operation Dry Water works to lower the number of boat crashes and to raise awareness of the dangers of impaired boating. More deadly boat crashes are caused by alcohol than anything else. Last year, 69 people died on waterways in Georgia.

When heading out on a boat, it is important to take steps to stay safe. If anyone plans to consume alcohol, there should be a designated boat operator. Life jackets are also a major factor in fatalities on the water, and 84 percent of people who die in water-related incidents were not using life jackets.

Not only will police be on the lookout for boat safety violations and drunk operators, but they will also be enforcing the governor’s social distancing executive order. Officials hope to keep everyone on the water safe and healthy.
