Driver Kills Teen in Tragic Hit-and-Run Crash in Cumming, Georgia (GA)
CUMMING, GA- Oxygen.com writes that a young teenager was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver in Cummings. The horrible crash occurred while the thirteen-year-old was on the sidewalk walking with his father near a church. Reports indicate that a white SUV was speeding down the road and left the street, jumping onto the sidewalk where it struck the boy and his father.*
The impact sent the teen into the air causing severe injuries. Responders rushed the two victims to the hospital and then flew the teen to the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. The father suffered injuries to his leg. The boy was placed on life support four several days before dying from his injuries.
Shortly after the crash, police were able to locate the suspect’s SUV, where it was parked in a driveway not far from the site of the incident. Damage to the vehicle’s bumper was consistent with the collision.
The driver, identified as a woman, allegedly displayed signs of alcohol impairment, and according to reports, was possibly under the influence of an additional substance.
The woman is now facing multiple charges including vehicular homicide, hit-and-run resulting in death, driving under the influence, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane and driving too fast for conditions.
The driver is now in the Forsyth County jail, where she is being held without bond.
Hit-and-run fatalities are sadly on the rise throughout the United States. Georgia comes in fourteenth in the nation in terms of these deadly collisions. Pedestrians are the most common victims killed by fleeing motorists. The reason that pedestrians are dying more often in these incidents is that the cars involved suffer minor damage as compared to a crash with another vehicle and are therefore more likely to remain operational.
