Motorcycle Crash Tragically Kills One on Route 43 in Canton Township, Ohio, (OH)

June 24, 2020

CANTON TOWNSHIP, OH- Cantonrep.com writes that a man from South Carolina was killed in a motorcycle crash in Ohio this week. The incident occurred in the late evening on Route 43 between Millerton Street and 17th Street SE.*

The victim, who was identified as a 50-year-old man from Cloverton, South Carolina, was riding northbound on a 2010 Harley-Davidson Super Glide. The motorcyclist collided head-on with a southbound 2001 Chrysler Towne and Country minivan.

The driver operating the minivan was identified as a 71-year-old man from Malvern. The victim was ejected from the motorcycle in the impact and was declared dead at the scene of the crash.

It is not clear whether the driver also sustained injuries in the wreck. The incident remains under investigation.

Motorcycles present riders with more risks than those that are faced by drivers in other types of cars. People on motorcycles are not as well protected and are less visible to others on the road. Riders are also required to use more skill and balance when they are riding than what drivers are required to use.

As a result of all the additional risk factors faced by motorcyclists, they are at a risk of fatal injuries that is about 27 times that of people traveling as occupants in passenger vehicles.

It is possible to reduce the risk of being killed by wearing a helmet. Studies indicate that helmets are about 37 percent effective at preventing death and reduce the risk of brain injuries by an even greater amount.

In 2018, 4,985 people lost their lives in motorcycle crashes. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 63 percent of the victims were killed in collisions that involved other vehicles.
