Reports Show that Most Train Crashes are Caused by Human Error
MACON, GA- 13wmaz.com writes that investigators looking at the cause of train crashes are finding that most of these incidents are the result of human error. Records also show a disturbing indication that these crashes take place far more often than many people realize. In fact, in Georgia, in 2018, researchers found that these collisions take place about once every four days.*
According to the Federal Railroad Administration, about one in three incidents are caused by human error which make mistakes the leading cause of these wrecks. Some of the crashes have not resulted in fatalities but have led to expensive damage. In fact, one derailment in Dooly County led to $1.7 million in damage. Within ten days of that crash, an accident in Macon County that also involved a derailed train led to $500,000 in damages. In other cases, the cost is not only financial but involves the tragic loss of life. In 2018, six people died in train crashes in the state, and many more were injured.
Behind mistakes, trains also crash as a result of track conditions. Faulty train tracks led to around twenty percent of the state's train crashes. Just two train lines were responsible for the majority of Georgia's train incidents. CSX trains led to 75 crashes, while Norfolk Southern was involved in 44. In total, there were a little over 130 train crashes in the state.
While too many train crashes are still taking place each year, Operation Lifesaver writes that the number of incidents between trains and cars has dropped by 83 percent nationally since 1972. In 1972, there were 12,000 of such crashes. In comparison, by 2017, there were 2,123.
