Forsyth County Celebrates Memorial Day Without Tragic Car Crashes
FORSYTH COUNTY, GA- Forsythnews.com writes that Memorial Day in Forsyth County was not plagued by deadly car crashes this year. The state did see a rise in DUI arrests, however, indicating that not everyone was taking the proper steps to keep themselves and others out of harm’s way on the road.*
Police records indicate that eighteen drivers were arrested and charged with DUIs over the three-day holiday. During last year’s weekend, there were just ten arrests. The number of crashes dropped though from 29 last year to just sixteen this year.
Officials are not sure why the drop in accidents occurred but are grateful for the relative calm over the holiday. On Lake Lanier, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources stated that one boat incident led to thirteen injuries, but that it was otherwise a fairly uneventful weekend in terms of accidents.
The boat incident involved a 31-foot cabin cruiser that suffered mechanical problems leaving the vessel stranded on the water. While the people aboard the cruiser waited for help, another boat struck the vessel’s rear.
The incident led to nine people being hospitalized, although none of the injuries are considered life-threatening.
The person operating the boat that collided with the drifting vessel was charged for boating under the influence. One other injury took place on the water, along with two other boating incidents, and eleven other people facing charges for BUI.
Officers stated that they did not have issues with many violations of the social distancing orders and that when people were asked to disperse, they complied. The authorities in the county were in agreement that people were, for the most part, responsible over the holiday.
