The National Safety Council Reports Fatalities Increase Despite Quarantine
USA- Ehstoday.com writes that fatal car crashes are on the rise throughout the nation even while fewer people are out on the road. When it comes to deaths per miles traveled, the National Safety Council reports that in March, there was a fourteen percent increase in fatalities.*
The number of miles traveled throughout the country is 18.6 percent lower than it was at the same time in 2019. The reason seems to be largely a consequence of increased recklessness and speeding on the road.
The NSC stated that there have been reports of drivers speeding and weaving in the lightened traffic. The state of Georgia was also pointed to as a part of the problem as that state has begun to offer new driver’s licenses to teens who have not taken a road test. Another potential problem is the loosening of hours of service regulations for commercial drivers.
With the holiday weekend, the NSC asked drivers to stay off of the roads if their state officials have asked them to do so. If drivers are out on the road, then it is important to follow the speed limit, even if there is light traffic. Just because a road is clear does not mean drivers can travel at speeds above the posted limits.
Pedestrians are also advised to use caution. While there are fewer cars out, this does not mean that there are no vehicles on the road. Drivers should remember that there could be increased pedestrian traffic and larger numbers of cyclists as people seek ways to get out of their homes.
Of course, as always, the NSC reminds motorists to use seat belts, never drive drunk, not to drive while drowsy, and to keep their attention on the road. Parents with teens were reminded to model safe driving habits for young motorists and to practice with new drivers frequently.
