Georgia has been successfully lowering the number of traffic crashes that impact the state each year. A new hands-free law that went into effect in 2018 is credited with helping to limit the number of deadly collisions in the state.
Still, crashes occur frequently and often lead to long delays for motorists in the area. With truck traffic on the rise in Georgia, the state has developed a way to reduce the time required to clear crashes involving these large vehicles.
The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) began offering companies a $3,500 bonus if they manage to clear the scene of a truck accident in 90 minutes or less. Prior to the program, which has been named the Towing, Recovery, and Incentive Program (TRIP), the average time for clearing the wreckage of a truck incident was about four and a half hours.
The program was started in 2008 but was focused on the highways surrounding metro Atlanta. Now the success of TRIP means that the state will be expanding the bonus program to other parts of the state. In the Atlanta area alone, the program helps clear hundreds of crashes quickly and efficiently each year. The bonus serves as an incentive for companies to work fast and to keep the necessary equipment on hand and ready to go in the event that they are called in to clear the site of a collision.
Estimates indicate that while the program costs in the hundreds of thousands a year, it saves the state eleven times what it costs.
