Severe Crash in Marietta Hospitalizes Two in Marietta, Georgia (GA)
MARIETTA, GA- Atlanta.cbslocal.com writes that a crash occurred on Interstate 75 in Marietta that severely injured two individuals. Police are now searching for witnesses who might have information about the wreck.*
The incident took place in the evening close to the South Marietta Parkway. A 25-year-old man from Mississippi was traveling northbound on the interstate in a 2013 Hyundai Elantra when he tried to pass another vehicle. The other vehicle, identified as a 2016 Lexus ES350, was being driven by a 35-year-old man from Kennesaw.
The two vehicles collided, and the driver in the Hyundai allegedly lost control over his car. The vehicle then struck a median before ricocheting back into traffic, where it collided with a tractor-trailer driven by a 54-year-old man from Florida.
The driver in the Hyundai and a passenger in that car were both severely injured in the crash. The passenger was identified as a 25-year-old man from Mississippi. Responders transported both of the injured victims to the WellStar Kennestone Hospital.
Police reports indicate that the driver in the Hyundai is facing multiple charges, including for open container violations, speeding, driving under the influence, and reckless driving. One report from CBS states that one of the tickets includes a charge for traveling 113 miles per hour in a 65 mile per hour zone. The passenger in the vehicle is facing charges as well, including for possession of drugs.
The investigation is still underway, and officers are asking for anyone who witnessed the crash to contact the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP).
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that speed-related crashes killed 9,378 individuals in 2018.
