Victim Pinned By Escalade on Interstate 475 in Macon, Georgia

May 20, 2020

MACON, GA- writes that a man was struck by a vehicle on Interstate 475 near the overpass at Tucker Road. The wreck took place late in the evening after a 26-year-old driver in a Ford Explorer suffered a tire blowout.*

The blowout caused the motorist in the Explorer to lose control of his vehicle, and it stopped in the road where it blocked the center lane and the right lane. Reports stated that a woman traveling in a Mercedes then tried to avoid striking the Explorer, but then spun out and collided with a wall. A passenger in the Mercedes then exited the car in order to check on the person in the Ford. A 27-year-old Tifton man in a Cadillac Escalade attempted to avoid striking the other two vehicles but collided with the passenger who had exited the Mercedes. The passenger was identified as a 31-year-old man. The victim became pinned beneath the Escalade.

The sheriff’s office then stated that the victim had sustained severe injuries and was transported to the Navicent Health Medical Center via ambulance. The man’s condition was reportedly critical. The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office was carrying out the investigation into the incident and asked that anyone with information about the wreck contact their office or Crime Stoppers.

Tire blowouts cause hundreds of deaths a year. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) writes that in 2017, 738 people died in crashes that were related to tire issues. It is important that drivers understand what tires they should have on their vehicles, and how often those tires need to be serviced. Poorly maintained tires are more likely to blow out or go flat, creating risks for the driver and others on the road.
