Police Officer Strikes and Kills Pedestrian in Georgia

May 20, 2020

TUCKER, GEORGIA- writes a fatal pedestrian crash that took place in Georgia this week in Tucker. The deadly crash occurred in the late evening on Hugh Howell Road near a Wendy’s restaurant. The Georgia State Patrol reported that the officer struck the man while he was crossing the road outside of a designated crosswalk.*

The officer is now on administrative leave following the fatal incident. Early in the morning after the wreck, reporters on the scene stated that there were articles of clothing on the roadway, including shoes. It is not clear whether those items belonged to the victim. A police vehicle was on the scene, being removed by a wrecker. The investigation into the crash is still underway.

Deadly car crashes have been dropping in Georgia in recent years. Officials credit the hands-free legislation for the improving numbers. However, while the number of overall deadly collisions dropped, the number of pedestrian incidents is increasing each year. In a five year period, the number of people killed in pedestrian collisions in Georgia increased by 60 percent.

Nationally, some reports indicate that deadly pedestrian collisions increased last year as well. If the numbers provided by the Governor’s Highway Safety Association are accurate, then more people died in 2019 in pedestrian accidents across the country than at any point in three decades.

As pedestrians face greater risks, Vision Zero programs have been starting up in various parts of the United States with the purpose of reducing or eliminating fatal traffic accidents.

Georgia is one of the five states in which nearly half of all pedestrian deaths take place, along with Florida, Texas, Arizona, and California.
