Tragic Crash Kills One on Turnpike in Martin County, Florida

May 18, 2020

MARTIN COUNTY, FL- Cbs12.com writes that a food truck and a dump truck collided this week on the Florida Turnpike. The incident occurred overnight in Martin County in the southbound lanes near the Kanner Highway overpass.*

Reports indicate that one of the trucks collided with the back of the other truck leading to both of the vehicles rolling over. The victim was a 27-year-old New Port Richie Man. The crash also severely injured a 58-year-old West Palm Beach man, who was transported to the hospital with severe injuries.

The incident led to the closure of the southbound traffic lanes for several hours.

In 2018, 4,136 people died in truck crashes throughout the country. The truck occupants are less likely to be killed in crashes than are people in vehicles that collide with trucks. In fact, out of all crashes involving large trucks, only sixteen percent of the victims were occupants in the trucks, while 67 percent were people in smaller vehicles. Another fifteen percent of those killed are motorcyclists, cyclists, or pedestrians.

Rollovers are a common factor in fatal crashes involving large trucks. In 45 percent of fatal collisions involving these vehicles, they rolled over. The percent of deaths caused by rollover crashes was higher for large trucks than it was for SUVs and much higher than rollover fatalities involving sedans.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), more than half of large truck occupants who died in crashes were not wearing a seatbelt. The numbers are similar to those of other vehicle occupants. Alcohol use is rarely an issue in large truck collisions.
