Georgia Department of Transportation Addressing Truck Crash Impact on Atlanta Traffic
ATLANTA, GA- Ajc.com writes that traffic slowed recently after a truck crashed on the Perimeter, catching fire and leaving all lanes blocked for hours. While the traffic delays were substantial, they would likely have been worse without a new statewide program created to clear wrecks in less time.*
A GDOT program focused in Atlanta has worked to clear truck accidents quickly by paying tow truck and recovery services a $3,500 bonus for clearing the scene in under 90 minutes. The program has been working so well that the Towing, Recovery, and Incentive Program (TRIP) is now being expanded throughout Georgia.
Freight is increasing in the state leading to 20,000 trucks traveling on its roads each day. The Port of Savannah has been growing, and the volume of trucks is likely to increase further. As a result, crashes involving these massive vehicles are also expected to rise. The TRIP program was used 258 times in Atlanta in 2018.
Crashes are leading to around half of the area’s congestion problems, including truck incidents and other collisions.
Prior to implanting the program, clearing the roads in the aftermath of a truck crash took an average of about four hours and 30 minutes. Once the incentives were put into place, the time to clear the scene dropped to an average of under two hours to clear a scene.
The program cost GDOT $570,000 in 2017. Studies indicate that the costs saved in time, gas, and other related expenses are about eleven times what the state is paying in these bonuses.
