Every year more than 10,000 people are killed in the United States in car crashes caused by drunk drivers. The numbers average out to about 30 people every day or one victim every 50 minutes.
While the number of such wrecks has dropped significantly over the past 30 years, these preventable tragedies still create a common danger.
Alcohol severely impairs a person's ability to safely operate a car. Every state has a limit of .08 percent alcohol per volume for drivers, but even below that level, alcohol can impact a driver's ability. At just .05 percent alcohol per volume, a person is less alert, has impaired judgment, loss of ability to focus their eyes, and other effects that can make driving dangerous.
