One Crash Leads to Another in Moultrie, Georgia (GA)

April 14, 2020

MOULTRIE, GA- Moultrieobserver.com writes that a crash led to injuries and one man being hospitalized in Moultrie, Georgia. The incident took place at the intersection of Ellenton Omega Road and Georgia Highway 37. A 67-year-old man from North Carolina was driving southbound when he passed through the stop sign at the intersection. The motorist then left the roadway and struck a utility pole before ending up on the shoulder of the road.*

The vehicle sustained severe damage in the crash. Police stated that the driver had not stopped at the intersection, but no ticket was issued to the injured man. Responders transported the driver to the Colquitt Regional Medical Center, where he was treated.

Within ten minutes of that incident, a 21-year-old motorist from Florida collided with the power lines damaging his vehicle. The second crash was reported as having been the fault of the first collision, which left the power lines from the utility pole on the roadway.

Secondary collisions are crashes that are related, although not directly to a first collision event. In some instances, this simply means that the second crash occurs in the congestion that resulted from an earlier crash.

One study found that once in every 9.9 crashes, a secondary collision occurs. A secondary wreck also occurred after vehicles became disabled on the roadway once every 54 incidents, and following one out of every 7.8 car fires. In total, 9.2 of all collisions are a secondary crash. In fact, about 6.2 percent of events are tertiary to a collision. The study also found that the risk of one of these subsequent collisions increases with more time spent at the scene of the accident.
