Two-Vehicle Collision Blocks US Highway 11W in Bristol Tennessee (TN)

April 10, 2020

BRISTOL, TN- Heraldcourier.com writes that a two-vehicle wreck close to Bristol involving a truck and a car blocked traffic. The incident occurred in the mid-afternoon close to Deck Valley Road. At least one injury occurred. An ambulance was on the scene and transported a person to the hospital.*

Large truck crashes continue to rise around the United States. In fact, truck occupant fatalities rose to their highest level in decades in 2018. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 885 truck drivers were killed in wrecks during that year. The last time deaths were that high was 1988.

Not only did crashes that killed truck occupants increase, but deadly crashes between trucks and other vehicles are rising as well. The number of deadly collisions involving large trucks went from 4,369 in 2017, to 4,678 in 2018, indicating a one percent rise. The numbers went up for four years straight, indicating that these deaths are trending in the wrong direction.

While fatal truck collisions increased, the number of overall traffic deaths has dropped. In 2018, fatalities declined by 2.4 percent as compared to the previous year. Passenger car occupants, along with occupants of vans and SUVs, all saw declines in the number of fatalities. The same was true for pickup truck occupants and motorcyclists.

The reason most of these categories are seeing drops likely has a lot to do with the fact that newer passenger vehicles are much safer than they used to be. Advanced crash avoidance systems are now working to lower the overall number of collisions.

Trucks will also be outfitted with crash prevention systems, but these improvements are only beginning to make their way into these large vehicles.
