Tragic Fatal Car Crash on Alabama 53 in Huntsville, Alabama
HUNTSVILLE, AL- Al.com writes that a man from Huntsville was recently indicted in connection with a one-vehicle collision that occurred close to a year ago. The driver, identified as a twenty-year-old man, is facing manslaughter charges and a possible maximum sentence of twenty years.*
The passenger in the car, a twenty-year-old woman, died in the collision, which is allegedly the result of "reckless driving." Police reports indicate that the motorist was traveling at a high rate of speed and drove through a stop sign at the intersection of Alabama 53 and Blake Bottom Road. He then lost control of his 2006 Honda Civic, and the car rolled multiple times. The severe wreck was caught on a surveillance camera located near the scene.
Police filed charges because of the failure to stop at the sign and for driving above the speed limit. Drugs and alcohol are not suspected in relation to the collision. The victim was declared dead at the scene of the wreck. Another passenger and the driver both suffered serious injuries and were transported to the hospital. The driver was later taken into custody.
The case was presented in front of the grand jury in Madison County prior to the court closing because of the coronavirus. The grand jury found that the evidence against the man is sufficient for prosecutors to bring the case to trial.
Currently, the suspect is out of jail after posting a $20,000 bail.
Speeding-related collisions killed 9,378 people in the United States in 2018. When a driver speeds, they have a greater chance of losing control over their vehicle. Speeding also decreases the effectiveness of protective equipment in cars.
