School Bus Collision Injures 27 in in East Kansas (KS)

March 26, 2020

TOPEKA, KA- writes that a recent school bus crash caused injuries to 27 students. The incident occurred while the bus was transporting the fifth graders on a field trip. The driver reportedly lost control of the large vehicle causing it to crash onto its side.*

The weather appears to have played a role in the wreck. At the time, a moderate snow fall was occurring in the area. Responders arrived on the scene in the late morning to find the bus overturned on the Kansas Turnpike.

The early reports indicated that seventeen of the students suffered injuries in the incident and were transported to the Newman Regional Health medical facility. The remaining students were transported to a nearby high school where counselors and nurses were on hand to speak with them. A short while later, another nine students were determined to have suffered injuries as well and were transported to the hospital.

Some have criticized the school for doing a poor job of informing parents about the incident. One parent whose son suffered injuries in the crash stated that he felt that the school had purposely kept information from him regarding the collision. In fact, he stated that he learned of the accident from news coverage before anyone notified him.

Injuries caused by bus crashes are severe. Broken bones, head injuries, and other serious consequences can result when these massive vehicles are involved in wrecks.

Across the country, about 17,000 children are treated in emergency rooms for injuries that they sustained in school bus crashes. When these incidents occur, there are many questions regarding fault and liability. The incident could have been caused by road conditions, a negligent bus driver, or another motorist. Those injured in these crashes should consult an attorney to discuss their claim.
