Car Strikes and Kills Woman in Tragic Crash in DeKalb County, Georgia (GA)

DEKALB COUNTY, GA- Fox5atlanta.com writes that two pedestrian crashes occurred on the same day this week, with the second incident resulting in a fatality. The crash took place in the evening close to Rockbridge Road. The victim was reportedly a woman in her mid-50s who died at the crash site.*

The driver involved in the crash remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigating authorities. 

Two children were involved in an earlier pedestrian incident. The pair were attempting to cross South Hairston Road when a vehicle struck and injured them. The injuries sustained by the children are not considered life-threatening. 

Pedestrian crashes in Georgia and nationally are on the rise. In 2018, Georgia saw an encouraging decrease in the number of car crash-related deaths in the state. While there were 1,540 fatalities in 2017, the number dropped to 1,504 in 2018, indicating a decline of about 2.3 percent. The numbers match the national rates, which dropped by 2.4 percent in the same period of time. 

Still, pedestrians are dying more often. In fact, throughout the state, the number of pedestrian deaths jumped by 60 percent in just five years. Officials in the state of Georgia believe that the hands-free law, which became active in 2018, is helping the state lower their number of traffic deaths. However, the problems created by smartphones and distracted drivers are still believed to be impacting pedestrian deaths. Pedestrians are also prone to distractions caused by the use of electronic devices. The authorities say that it is important for people in the state to use marked crosswalks and use caution when they are trying to cross the street.
