Motorcyclist Dies in Tragic Crash on Barrett Parkway in Cobb County, Georgia

March 21, 2020

COBB COUNTY, GA- writes that a motorcyclist died in a collision in Cobb County over the weekend. The incident occurred at the intersection of Rocky Ridge Road and Barrett Parkway when a 2016 motorcycle was traveling northbound and struck a Toyota Avalon that was about to make a left run. The victim was identified as a 43-year-old man from Marietta.*

Responders rushed the motorcyclist to the hospital, but he was declared dead once he arrived. The other driver, a 57-year-old woman, did not sustain injuries in the wreck. Police are still investigating the incident and are requesting that anyone with information about the collision contact investigators.

When it comes to motorcycle crashes, left turns are one of the most common causes of deadly wrecks. The motorcyclist is not typically at fault when another driver turns left into their pathway, but the biker is the one who will face the harshest consequences of that driver’s error.

Left turning drivers must look for an opening in traffic. When scanning for a chance to complete their turn, drivers frequently fail to notice motorcycles as these smaller two-wheeled vehicles are not what the motorist is looking to see. The drivers are scanning for other cars and larger automobiles, and perhaps due to a perception bias, they easily fail to notice motorcycles.

While it is the responsibility of drivers to keep an eye out for motorcyclists, bikers should consider their own safety as well. When a motorcycle approaches an intersection, riders should use extra caution and slow down. Bikers should look at any driver who is about to make a turn as a potential risk to their safety.
