Reports Indicate Driver who Crashed into Shopping Plaza Suffered Medical Episode
THE VILLAGES, FL- Villages-news.com write that a car crashed into a shopping center in The Villages this week. The incident occurred in the la-teafternoon when a 55-year-old man drove his silver 2008 Mercedes convertible into a hair salon and a liquor store. Two pedestrians sustained critical injuries in the crash.*
Police are now stating that the man who caused the collision suffered from a medical episode causing him to drive his car off the road and into the shops. The car first struck several planters in front of the shops but then traveled onto the sidewalk, where it collided with a 72-year-old woman from Pennsylvania. Debris from the planters struck and injured a 67-year-old woman from The Villages. The vehicle then struck a 2011 Lexus vehicle driven by an 84-year-old man from Wisconsin. Finally, the car stopped when it struck the pillars in front of the salon. The debris from the impact injured a thirteen-year-old boy from Leesburg. The two victims struck by the debris and the woman from Pennsylvania all suffered severe injuries in the crash. The driver who caused the incident was also severely injured.
Reports indicate that he has a prior arrest from a 2018 incident at a Lake Sumpter Landing restaurant. The other driver and a passenger in the Lexus were not injured. Police have not yet filed charges against the driver of the Mercedes. It is not clear what type of a medical episode the driver may have suffered, leading to the crash. Medical episodes are a rare cause of vehicle collisions. Human error is far more likely to cause wrecks.
