Drunk Driver Strikes and Kills Trucker in Tragic Interstate 95 Crash

March 16, 2020

HANOVER, VA- Wric.com writes that a truck driver was killed in a crash in Hanover County this week when a drunk driver crossed over the center line on Interstate 95 and struck the semi head-on. The trucker then lost control of his vehicle and collided with the guardrail, causing the vehicle to roll over. The 53-year-old trucker was trapped in his car and had to be extricated from the truck. He passed away at the scene of the crash.*

The drunk motorist was driving a 1999 Jeep Cherokee in the southbound lanes before losing control of the car and entering oncoming traffic. The man was identified as a 37-year-old from Midlothian. The truck, which was hauling vegetables, also leaked diesel on the roadway leading to the Department of Agriculture being contacted. Police charged the driver for drunk driving.

Drunk drivers cause more than 10,000 fatal crashes every year in the United States. These incidents have dropped significantly, and yet they continue to cause about 29 percent of all fatal car crashes. In most states, the legal limit for drivers is .08 percent alcohol per volume. In Utah, the limit was changed to .05 percent blood alcohol content in an effort to further deter people from driving under the influence. Studies indicate that drivers are impaired at lower levels of intoxication, and some people recommend that the limit be lowered in other parts of the country in the same manner as Utah. Drugged driving is also becoming a bigger problem and reducing some of the gains made by reducing the drunk driving rates.
