One Killed and One in Critical Condition Following Habersham County Crash
HABERSHAM COUNTY, GA- Fox5eatlanta.com writes that a teenager and another driver were involved in a deadly collision this week in Habersham County. A 65-year-old man from Toccoa died at the scene of the crash.*
Reports indicate that the teen was traveling on Talmadge Drive when his car and the victim’s vehicle struck one another head-on. Classmates were distraught at the news of the crash and the school principle stated that the school held a moment of silence for the varsity baseball player. He was described as a hard worker with a positive attitude. The man who died in the wreck had lived in Toccoa for his entire life and was a businessman in the area. The victim left behind his wife, a daughter, and two grandchildren. He also had a twin sister and many nieces and nephews.
Head-on collisions cause intense forces to be exerted on the people in the vehicles. Studies indicate that the rate of fatalities in head-on impacts becomes high at about 43-miles-per-hour. Those numbers include occupants who are using their seat belts and have safe vehicles with airbags. The numbers also assume that the two vehicles involved are about the same size. Given the deadly nature of these wrecks at such low speeds, safety experts recommend that roads that have high-speed limits have medians in place to separate lanes of traffic traveling in opposite directions.
In many parts of the United States, roads have high-speed limits and do not have any barriers in place to prevent cars from crossing into oncoming traffic.
