Drunk Driver Runs Over Girlfriend in Polk County, Florida

March 02, 2020

POLK COUNTY, FL- writes that a drunk driver ran over and killed his girlfriend and then fled the scene of the crash. The incident occurred when the driver left a bar after his girlfriend left to walk home. The man struck the woman and stated that he believed he had collided with an animal. After looking back, he stated he saw he had actually hit a person.*

Rather than staying at the scene to render aid, the man returned to the bar before eventually returning to the site of the incident. Police stated that when he returned to the location of the crash, he was extremely emotional and had to be held back because he was attempting to approach the victim’s body.

The driver admitted to officers that he had drunk ten beers prior to the collision. Records indicate that the man had three previous drunk driving convictions on his records.

The 40-year-old victim had two sons, ages twelve and fourteen. The children’s father stated that the death has been difficult on the family.

The driver is now facing multiple charges, including leaving the scene of a fatal crash, DUI manslaughter, and driving without a license.

Drunk drivers kill almost 30 people per day in the United States. While the numbers remain high, they have dropped by about one third over the past 30 years. Despite progress, there are still more than 10,000 fatal drunk driving collisions each year across the country.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) states that it is important for everyone to arrange alternative transportation if they are planning to imbibe alcohol. It is also crucial not to allow friends and family to get behind the wheel after drinking.
