Driver Suffers Severe Injuries in a Crash on Interstate 70

March 04, 2020

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MO- writes that a driver suffered severe injuries in a collision that occurred on Interstate 70. The incident happened in the morning close to the Blanchette Bridge.*

A 26-year-old man driving a 2019 Isuzu Izo box truck was airlifted after his vehicle collided with a 2020 Freightliner Cascadia. The vehicles were both driving in the westbound lanes when they entered a construction zone. The larger truck came to an abrupt stop, and the box truck collided with the Freightliner’s rear. The 53-year-old driver in the tractor-trailer did not suffer injuries in the collision.

The westbound lanes remained closed for several hours while the Missouri Highway Patrol investigated the collision. The images from the scene show the badly mangled front of the box truck. The cabin is collapsed in after it struck the rear of the trailer.

Large trucks present risks to drivers on the road. These massive vehicles are continuing to be involved in a higher number of fatal collisions, even while occupants in smaller cars are less likely to be killed in a wreck.

Vehicle technology, such as crash avoidance systems, are credited with the reduced number of deaths. Such systems are being offered in large trucks as well and will hopefully help prevent crashes by providing truckers with warnings when cars are in their blind spots, or by alerting motorists when they are approaching stopped or slowing traffic. It is important to note that large trucks are challenging to operate and that they do not stop as quickly as smaller cars and cannot take evasive actions as easily. The limitations make these massive vehicles more difficult to drive.
